Types of BDSM Sessions: A Beginner's Guide
BDSM covers a wide range of activities, and professional sessions vary enormously depending on the provider and what you're looking for. This guide explains the main session types and what each actually involves.
Domination and submission (D/s)
D/s sessions focus on the power dynamic itself. The dominant is in control; the submissive follows instructions, performs tasks, or accepts whatever the dominant decides. Physical activity may or may not be involved — the core of D/s is psychological.
These sessions can range from mild (service, protocol, discipline) to intense (humiliation, forced vulnerability, strict obedience). The specific activities depend entirely on negotiation before the session.
Bondage and restraint
Bondage sessions involve physical restraint — rope, cuffs, tape, straps, cages. The focus is on the physical and psychological experience of being restrained. Some providers specialise exclusively in rope bondage (shibari/kinbaku); others offer restraint as part of a broader session.
If you have relevant health conditions (circulation problems, past injuries, anxiety), disclose them before the session. A good provider will adjust accordingly.
Impact play
Impact play covers spanking, paddling, caning, flogging, and similar activities. Intensity ranges from mild (over-the-knee spanking) to heavy (caning that leaves marks). Most providers require explicit prior agreement on implements and intensity.
If this is your first time, say so. Experienced providers know how to introduce impact play gradually and read physical responses. Don't try to seem more experienced than you are.
Roleplay and scenarios
Roleplay sessions involve a scripted or improvised scenario — interrogation, medical, authority figures, capture, and many others. The quality of a roleplay session depends heavily on both parties committing to it. Come prepared: know the scenario, your character, and your limits within it.
Speciality sessions
Beyond the core types: financial domination (tribute-based power exchange), foot worship, CBT, sissy training, chastity management, and others. Most providers list their specialities explicitly. Don't assume a provider offers something just because it's a common BDSM activity — always check the profile or ask.
